PhD Research Studentships

Four New Industry (Aston Martin F1, Continental Tyres, Birla Carbon and SLB) Funded PhD Studentships on Elastomeric Materials

Supervisor: James BUSFIELD
Apply by:26 July 2024
Start in:September (Semester 1)

Description

The candidates must have an interest in understanding the design and behaviour of high-performance elastomer products such as tyres or sealing systems used in geothermal sealing applications. The four industrial partners are all international global brand leaders and include Aston Martin F1 (based in the UK), Continental Tyres (Germany), Birla Carbon (USA) and SLB (USA). Each project is fully sponsored by the company whom you will visit as part of the project to become fully embedded in their research culture.

These 4 projects will be based in the world-leading Soft Matter Group at QMUL under the supervision of Prof James Busfield. The five topics covered include:

  • Optimised F1 Tyre Performance Through Improved Friction Models.
  • Unravelling the Role of Carbon Black Surface Modification in Tyre Performance Optimisation.
  • Developing Next Generation Sustainable Tyres utilising 3D Microstructural Simulations of Filler Reinforcement.
  • Effect of Thermochemical Degradation on Elastomer Fatigue Life and Fracture in High Pressure Sealing.
