Polymeric oil additives for future technologies

Supervisor:
Apply by:30 July 2018

Description

Engine emission targets are a crucial factor for the future design of engine oils and are increasingly driving the need to develop new additive technology. Improved fuel economy can be facilitated by reducing the friction contribution either of the bulk fluid, by lowering the viscosity of the oil, or by improving the friction of the contacting parts via the inclusion of friction modifiers. Therefore, this PhD project will focus on the development of novel macromolecular structures that can be directly applied as an oil additive. The successful student should have excellent skills in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, and analytical chemistry. Previous experience or knowledge on controlled radical polymerization techniques, ionic polymerization techniques, click reactions, small molecule synthesis and purification, and molecular analysis via NMR, GPC, MALDI-ToF MS, FT-IR, DSC, and TGA would be preferred. The project is funded by Infineum Ltd. and the student will attend regular project update meetings at Infineum to present and discuss her/his results. This is a great opportunity to pursue a PhD on industrially relevant material synthesis and development.
