QMUL and Higher Education Commission of Pakistan PhD studentships for entry in September 2018

Description

The School of Engineering and Materials Science has been allocated a quota of 10 QMUL / Higher Education Commission of Pakistan PhD studentships for entry in September 2018.

Note that under the terms of this scheme, Only applicants who have already successfully secured a HEC PhD Scholarship are eligible to apply to study on the PhD programmes with the School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary University of London.

Step 1 - HEC Funding Application Details:

Candidates should first of all put in an application to the HEC Pakistan under their 90% Overseas Scholarship Scheme or the Faculty Development Programme.

This scheme has several calls for applications throughout the year, so please check their website for the details of the dates and subject criteria for each call.

QMUL are happy to support candidates with their research proposals and interested applicants should contact the relevant school.

The HEC set out their own selection criteria, assessing candidates both on their merit and the relevance of their project to the current research and development needs of Pakistan. Full details of these criteria and the application process are available on the HEC website:

Step 2 - QM PhD Application Method (Only proceed if you have already successfully secured an HEC Pakistan PhD Studentship for study under the category of Engineering and Materials Science)

Before applying you need to ensure that the School has the expertise within the specific area to supervise your research. To do this, you should visit the School research web pages and review individual staff’s research interests: https://www.sems.qmul.ac.uk/research/

If you are able to identify a match with your own research interests, the next step is to complete the online application process to an appropriate Engineering or Materials PhD programme:

Please remember to include a reference to the "QMUL / HEC Pakistan PhD Studentships" and also the name of the Project/Supervisor to associate your application with this scheme.

Applicants are required to provide confirmation of their HEC PhD Scholarship and also to provide a realistic plan to secure sufficient funding for the duration of the PhD programme.  On your application, please be sure to include details of how you intend to secure sufficient funding to complete the research programme and writing up process (£1,265 GBP per month, for a minimum duration of 36 months).

  • Applicant required to start in September/October 2018
  • The minimum requirement for this studentship opportunity is a good Honours degree (minimum 2(i) honours or equivalent) or MSc/MRes in a relevant discipline.
  • If English is not your first language then you will require a valid English certificate equivalent to IELTS 6.5 and above (with a minimum score of 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 in each of the other test components).

The deadline for applicants to apply for study under this scheme is 30th April 2018, Applications will then held for consideration by the School’s Directors of Research. We plan to confirm the results of the chosen applicants via offer towards the end of May 2018.

Eligibility

  • The minimum requirement for this studentship opportunity is a good honours degree (minimum 2(i) honours or equivalent) or MSc/MRes in a relevant discipline.
  • If English is not your first language, you will require a valid English certificate equivalent to IELTS 6.5+ overall with a minimum score of 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 in all sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking).
  • Candidates are expected to start in (Semester ).
  • SEMS and Principal-funded studentships: this studentship arrangement covers home tuition fees and provides an annual stipend for up to three years (currently set at the 2023/24 stipend rate of £20,622 pa)
  • Note that Queen Mary Research Studentships cover home-rated tuition fees only (See: www.welfare.qmul.ac.uk/money/feestatus/ for details)
  • Overseas applicants would be required to meet the difference between home and international tuition fees
