Brief Biography

Dr. Ranjan Vepa obtained his Ph. D. (Applied Mechanics) in 1975 from Stanford University, USA. He is currently a Reader in Aerospace Engineering in the School of Engineering and Material Science, Queen Mary, University of London. His research interests include design of control systems, and associated signal processing with applications in aerospace systems, smart structures, space-robotics, energy and biomedical systems. In particular the research interests include the dynamics, robust estimation and control of linear and nonlinear aerospace, energy and propulsion systems, flow control systems, trajectory optimisation and trajectory tracking. His current research focus is on the control of aerospace systems based on computational models and on the control and optimisation of aerospace propulsion. He teaches Master's level courses on Advanced Spacecraft Design, Aircraft Flight Control and Simulation, Aeroelasticity and Robotics. He is the author of eight books titled: Electric Aircraft Dynamics: A Systems Engineering Approach, CRC Press, July, 2020, Dynamics and Control of Autonomous Space Vehicles and Robotics, CUP May, 2019, Nonlinear Control of Robots and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles: An Integrated Approach, (CRC Press, 2016), Flight Dynamics Simulation and Control of Aircraft: Rigid and Flexible, (Boca Raton: CRC Press, 2014), Dynamic Modelling, Simulation and Control of Energy Generation, (London: Springer, 2013), Dynamics of Smart Structures, (London: John Wiley, 2010) and Biomimetic Robotics: Mechanisms and Control, (New York: Cambridge University Press (CUP), 2009). A revised second edition of Dr Vepa's 2014 best selling book, Flight Dynamics, Simulation, and Control: For Rigid and Flexible Aircraft, including a whole new chapter on Dynamics and Control of Drones and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles was published recently in 2023. Vepa is also a Member, Royal Aeronautical Society, London and a Fellow of the UK's Higher Education Academy.
