Rubrene butterflies
Natalie Stingelin's image of rubrene crystals growing from an amorphous matrix is the cover image of this month edition of Materials Today. The polarized optical micrograph image shows a key step in the fabrication of high-mobility organic field effect transistors. Whereby a vitrifying species, added to the active semiconductor rubrene hampers the crystallisation. Therefore a film of vitreous nature is produced that can be crystalised later.
