SEMS PDRA-PhD seminars: Laura Bevis and Tim Hopkins

Date: Tuesday 9 July 2024 12:00 - 12:30

Location: SEMS Seminar Room, 3rd floor, Engineering Building

Title:

Cardiovascular digital twins: Model development for clinical applications

About the Speaker: Dr Laura Bevis

Dr Bevis is an applied Mathematician working in biological fluid dynamics. Interests include cardiac flow modelling, vitreous humour dynamics, low Reynolds number swimmers, and problems in surface tension, wetting and droplet dynamics. Working to understand and predict the movement of fluids and how they interact with their surroundings using mathematical modelling. Main interests lie within biology, for example, blood flow in the heart, the movement of small swimming organisms, and the flow of the vitreous humour within the eye.

Title:

Modelling Human Musculoskeletal Tissues using Organ-on-a-Chip Technology

About the Speaker: Dr Tim Hopkins

Dr Hopkins is working on a Versus Arthritis funded Foundation Fellowship within SEMS. The aim of the fellowship is to develop an organ-on-a-chip model of human cartilage and synovium to understand how these tissues interact in the human knee in health and disease. We believe that this interaction plays a key role in the pathobiology of osteoarthritis and influences how individual patients respond to treatment. We are seeking to improve our understanding in these key areas and ultimately to use the joint-on-a-chip to stratify and personalise therapies for osteoarthritis.
