Northwestern Polytechnical University celebrates 80th anniversary

Queen Mary University of London Partner school Northwestern Polytechnical University held a ceremony on October 13 to celebrate its 80th anniversary at Aoxiang Stadium on its Changan Campus in Xi'an. More than 4,500 people gathered for this special occasion, including leaders of the university, distinguished guests from home and abroad, representatives from various areas who have always supported NPU, representatives from the universities at home and abroad, representatives of NPU alumni from home and abroad and the teachers and students currently attending.

President of the Queen Mary University of London as well as the academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Prof Colin Beiley also made a speech during the ceremony. He said NPU has become a strategic partner of the Queen Mary University of London with a well-known world reputation in leading scientific research field and education. He hoped to continue further cooperation for future talents, based on co-training mechanism and co-researching between two universities.

西北工业大学隆重举行80周年校庆纪念大会

10月13日，英国玛丽女王大学西北工业大学在长安校区翱翔体育馆隆重举行80周年校庆纪念大会。各级领导、国内外嘉宾、长期关心和支持西工大发展的社会各界代表、国内外高校代表、海内外校友代表和在校师生4500多人欢聚一堂，共襄盛典。

伦敦玛丽女王大学校长、英国皇家工程院院士科林•贝利致辞。他表示，西工大不仅在中国享有盛誉，在世界领先的科研领域和高等教育方面也具有一定的影响力，因此西工大是伦敦玛丽女王大学的战略合作伙伴。他期待两校以合作办学机构为平台，以联合研究中心为助力，继续展开合作，共同培养未来世界的主人。

The Introduction to Chinese Traditional Culture III: Chinese Calligraphy Initiated by QMES Volunteer Team

Recently, QMES volunteer team introduced Chinese calligraphy to our foreign teachers Gabriel, Matt, Alan, Faith, Agne, and Matthew, as well as Executive Vice Dean Andy on the 23rd of May. With their professional explanation and guidance, our foreign teachers had a real taste

 of calligraphy and practised it well.

In the beginning, five categories of Chinese traditional calligraphy – Xing, Cao, Zhuan, Li, and Kai were introduced together with tools needed to do the practice. Taking “家” (Jia, family, house) as an example, the development of calligraphy was fully illustrated to our teachers. Getting interested in the art of calligraphy, our teachers have also introduced five representatives of notable calligraphers such as Wang Xizhi and his work Lantingji Xu.                                                                                                  

Before getting to practice, the volunteers explained to their teachers how to hold the brush, and how to write horizontal, left-falling, right-falling, turning, hook, raising and dot strokes, which were the elementary components of hanzi (characters). The first practised was “人” (ren, people). Executive Vice Dean Andy showed a great talent in doing calligraphy as he held the brush very professionally. Gabriel wrote wittily, which genuinely reflected his personality. Other teachers were excited to ask the volunteers about the characters they wanted to write. For example, Faith asked how to write “猫” (mao, cat), for she had a lovely cat at home.

The introduction of the session helped our foreign teachers build a deep understanding of Chinese traditional calligraphy and were an effective way to strengthen the tie between teachers and students.

板桥写兰如写字，秀叶疏花见姿致——玛丽女王工程学院外教领略中国书法之美

书法，作为中国特有的一种传统文化及艺术，经久不衰。其韵墨、笔法、书写、创作、内涵，无不镌刻着一代代文人墨客的风骨，铭记着一代代文化精髓的传承。中国书法传承三千余载，拥有着丰富无穷的文化底蕴与内涵，具有极其重要的文化价值与历史地位。

为促进文化交流，彰显文化自信，向外教展示中国书法文化的无穷魅力，进一步促进师生间的互动交流，5月23日下午七点，玛丽女王工程学院志愿者服务队的五名同学在学院学生活动室给外教们系统而生动地介绍了中国书法的文化内涵，并进行了中国书法实践。

首先，肖紫涵同学介绍了书法的五种字体以及书写毛笔字所需要的工具。“篆隶楷行草”五大书法字体各具特色风采斐然，令人眼前一亮；“笔墨纸砚”文房四宝在当今电脑手机时代所具有的价值也得到了充分展现。在她的基础上，关昊同学以“之子于归，宜其家室”的“家”字为例，向外教们阐述了汉字书法由甲骨文到当代简体字的漫长演变过程。

外教们了解到书法悠久的历史后，惊叹之余，也对书法产生了浓厚的兴趣。之后，周泽羽同学介绍了中国古代五位杰出的书法家以及他们不同风格的作品。在讲解过程中，外教Matthew发出疑问：“这些书法家是因为他们的作品而闻名，还是字体，抑或是两者兼顾？”周泽羽同学以《兰亭集序》为例，向外教们介绍了其在书法和中国文学上的双重历史地位，进一步阐释了书法文化传承的精髓。正所谓“字如其人，立品为先”。好的书法作品，其魅力是多种元素共同作用的结果，不仅在于蕴意丰富的字体与传承千古的文章，更在于书法家的人品与操守，在于其身上所蕴含的中华民族精神。

接下来，张明翔同学介绍了汉字中的基本笔画与笔法要求。汉字书法要求繁复，运笔技法讲究颇多。但他的讲解却是化繁为简，提纲挈领简明扼要的同时又能做到丰富有趣。

最后，就是最最激动人心的实践环节了！蔺琬然同学首先示范了握笔方式，并规范工整地书写了“人”字。此时的外教们已经跃跃欲试，执笔临摹，泼墨挥毫。Andrew展现出了强大的书法天赋，握笔姿势显得非常专业，写出的字也有几分native 的味道。Gabriel则是延续了俏皮的本色，将自己的性格融入到书写方式中，写出的人字也是充满活力，活泼生动而顽皮可爱。

时间过得飞快，一节课转眼就过去了。看着自己书写出的杰作，外教们都显得很兴奋，对中国文化也有更深的了解，并加深了学习中国传统文化的兴趣。志愿者服务队的同学们，不仅练习了自己的英语口语，更是提高了对中华文化的感悟，增强了民族文化认同感和自豪感，在生动实践中体验“传播好中国声音”，为自己的大学生活增添美好回忆。

笔画之间书傲骨，千年风骨不曾忘。作为中外合作办学下的学生，我们有责任、有义务、有能力去继承和发扬中华民族优秀传统文化。在学习生活中，我们要继承好老祖宗留下来的珍贵遗产，在国际舞台上，做好中华文化的传播者，将五千年中华文化发扬广大

The Introduction to Chinese Traditional Culture II: Myths and Legends Initiated by QMES Volunteer Team

Following the first successful class, the second session-- Myths and Legends class was introduced to QMES teachers, Matt, Alan, Faith, and Agne, as well as Executive Vice Dean Andy on the 18th of April. The Volunteer Team prepared plentiful materials and produced a professional presentation. They introduced all kinds of myths and legends from Pan Gu to Nv Wa, from Houyi and Chang’e to Niulang and Zhinv, and emphasized on the origin and stories of the Journey to the West, as well as Chinese mythical creatures and many vivid videos to explore the extensive and profound Chinese culture to the foreigners.

All the teachers took the class seriously by taking notes and raising the questions that they were interested in and in the end, they expressed the appreciation of the hard work of the volunteer team. The session was ended with lots of laughter and fun.

The success of this session not only introduced the beauty and plenty of Chinese traditional culture but also kept encouraging the Volunteer Team to contribute to the next session.

玛丽女王工程学院志愿者活动：中国传统文化课II-中国神话传说

继第一期课程后，第二期中国传统文化课--中国神话传说如约而至。4月18日，玛丽女王工程学院的执行副院长Andy，PDP老师Matt，以及三位英语老师Alan, Faith 和 Agne应邀加入到了此次课程中。志愿者团队准备了丰富的资料，制作了精美的讲义，从盘古和女蜗的传说开篇，到后羿和嫦娥、牛郎和织女的爱情故事，更重点介绍了西游记的来历和故事，以及许多中国神兽，最后并以生动的视频，向老师们展示了博大精深的中国文化。期间，老师们认真做着笔记，时不时提出感兴趣的问题，课后还对志愿者团队表示衷心感谢，整个课程充满了欢声笑语。

此次课程的成功，不仅令老师们领略了中国传统文化之美，还使学院的志愿者团队信心倍增，对下一期的课程更加期待。

The Introduction to Chinese Traditional Culture I: Chinese Chess Initiated by QMES Volunteer Team

The Volunteer Team of Queen Mary Engineering School (QMES) is initiating a series of classes to introduce five aspects of Chinese traditional culture which contains Chinese Chess, Myths and Legends, Food, Calligraphy and Kung Fu, to QMES teachers in order to help them to understand China better and promote cultural communication. Meanwhile, the confidence to Chinese culture will be also emphasized to the students themselves.

The Volunteer Team held the high enthusiasm in this programme and did a lot of specific preparation before the class, such as collecting the materials, studying on the content, editing the teaching plan and file, purchasing the teaching stuff and even producing the pre-task for the teachers, which is the same way as the one that the teachers give them.

In the Chinese Chess session on the 11th April, our English teachers - Alan, Faith, and Agne from QMES were introduced to the history of Chinese Chess, the pattern of the chessboard and its rules by the Volunteer Team. And then Faith won a souvenir Chinese Chess set because she answered correctly the following quiz. At the end of the session, Alan won the “epic battle” against Faith, which lasts over 2 hours. Agne, who observed the whole battle, described “it is so tense and dead silence in the room”.

 

玛丽女王工程学院志愿者活动：中国传统文化课I-中国象棋

玛丽女王工程学院的志愿者团队计划于本学期内，向学院的老师们介绍五方面的中国传统文化，分别为：中国象棋、中国神话传说、中国美食、中国书法及中国功夫，以帮助他们更好地认识中国、了解中国，促进文化交流，也同时提升学生的文化自信。

志愿者团队对此次课程的热情度极高，做了充分的准备，收集资料、研究内容、编写教案、制作讲义，还购买实物计划现场教学，甚至还效仿老师们平时给他们布置课前作业那样—准备课前预习任务。4月11日，三位英语老师：Alan，Faith 和Agne参加了第一堂中国象棋的课程。志愿者团队向他们详细介绍了中国象棋的历史、棋盘棋子的样式和分布，以及对弈规则等内容。随后，Faith老师在随堂测验中回答正确，赢得了一套中国象棋纪念品。而在之后进行的Alan和Faith两位老师的正式对弈中，Alan老师历经两个多小时，最终取得了“世纪对决”的胜利。在旁观战的Agne老师形容“对弈太紧张了，房间里一片寂静”。

第一堂传统文化课在Alan老师胜利的欢呼声中顺利结束。外教们一致认为课程很富有趣味性，并且学生们熟练运用英语、自信自如的表现更令他们印象深刻。他们都对下一期课程充满期待。

QMES Delegation Attended Student International Forum Held by SCUPI

From 14th to 15th, April 2018, the Student International Forum organized by Sichuan University-Pittsburgh Institute (SCUPI) was held on Jiang’an Campus, Sichuan University. Led by counsellor Ji Xiao, student representatives Xin Yuepeng, Shi Boning, Sun Yutong, Zhang Xinyue, Lin Wanran, Gong Yuanhao, and Su Shihan were invited to attend the forum on behalf of Queen Mary University of London Engineering School (QMES), Northwestern Polytechnical University.

The Student International Forum was officially opened on the morning of 14th April in the lecture hall of the School of Law, Jiang’an Campus, Sichuan University. Professor Qiu Minjing, Dean of SCUPI, delivered a welcome speech. The forum also invited Professor Paul Woolridge of the University of Michigan - Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute to give a keynote speech who shared with the participants the changes and development of language in the times of globalization and internationalization.

The forum provided an opportunity for students from Chinese-Foreign Collaborative Institutions to exchange ideas and strengthen their understanding of various joint institutes. Through the forum, students widened their horizons, made new friends, gained new experience, and learned from each other. As students from a newly established Chinese-Foreign Collaborative Institution, our delegation showed their confidence and thinking which was recognized and praised. This exchange experience strengthened our students’ confidence in continuously improving their capabilities and encouraged them to strive for a bright future on the international stage.

玛丽女王工程学院学生代表赴四川大学匹兹堡学院参加国际学生交流论坛

2018年4月14日至15日，由四川大学匹兹堡学院主办的2018年四川大学匹兹堡学院国际学生交流论坛在四川大学江安校区拉开帷幕。由辅导员老师姬潇带队，辛月鹏、史博宁、孙雨桐、张馨月、蔺琬然、龚元昊和苏诗涵受邀代表西北工业大学伦敦玛丽女王大学工程学院参加此次论坛。

国际学生论坛于14日上午在四川大学江安校区法学院报告厅正式开始，四川大学匹兹堡学院院长邱民京教授致欢迎词。论坛也邀请到上海交通大学密歇根学院Paul Woolridge教授做主旨发言人，向参会者分享了全球国际化视野下的语言变迁与发展。

在学生团队分享环节，各学院代表团进行主题为Student Development in Chinese-Foreign Collaborative Institutions的展示。玛丽女王工程学院作为本次参会唯一的新生代表团，辛月鹏、史博宁、孙雨桐、张馨月四名学生代表，别出心裁以场景剧的形式展现了中外合作办学环境下的所思、所学、所悟、所想，生动地展示出他们在玛丽女王工程学院学习的切身体会与迫切需求。他们流利的口语、自信的表现、默契的配合赢得了全场的掌声。匹兹堡学院邱民京院长对我院学生别出心裁的展示表示高度赞扬，并鼓励同学们利用好玛丽女王工程学院的优质平台，潜心学习，争做国际化人才。

此次论坛的举办为中外合作办学机构学生提供了一个交流展示的机会，增进各学院之间的了解与认识。在交流中，同学们开拓视野、收获友谊、获取经验、互相学习。作为新成立的中外合作办学机构的学生，我院代表团对外展示出自己的优良风采风貌，并获得了认可与好评，这也让学院学子更加坚定了要不断提高自身能力，努力活跃在国际化的舞台上，开垦出美好未来的信心与决心。

QMES Held the First Meeting of Student-Staff Liaison Committee

The first meeting of Student-Staff Liaison Committee of Queen Mary University of London Engineering School, NPU was held in March 21st, 2018 in QMES Meeting Room, East Teaching Building A, Chang'an Campus. Chen Jun, Vice Dean and Director of SSLC; Andrew Bushby, Executive Vice Dean and Deputy Director of SSLC attended the meeting. Committee members Shi Xuetao, Zhang Tiebang, Matthew Potter, Gabriel Cavalli, Du Jiannan, Qi Yue, and all student committee members joined the meeting. 

The setting and running of SSLC provide a long-term mechanism for effective communication between students and staff. The staff of QMES collected many opinions from students through this meeting. Further improvements and efforts need to be made at next stage.

西北工业大学伦敦玛丽女王大学工程学院召开师生联络委员第一次会议

2018年3月21日，西北工业大学伦敦玛丽女王大学工程学院师生联络委员会（Queen Mary University of London Engineering School, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Student Staff Liaison Committee）第一次会议在长安校区玛丽女王工程学院会议室展开。学院副院长、师生联络委员会主任陈俊，学院执行副院长、师生联络委员会副主任Andrew Bushby，教师委员史学涛、张铁邦、Matthew Potter、Gabriel Cavalli、杜剑楠、齐玥，及全体学生委员龚元昊、刘扬、李博轩、柳书博、眭雨鹏、杜家宝、宋金铼、刘烨锟、肖紫涵、何沐锟、李子睿、孙致远、蔺琬然、王子航参加了此次会议。

师生联络委员会的建立和顺利运行，为加强师生交流提供了长期机制。此次会议使学院及时了解到学生的学习现状，收集到了许多改善意见，同时明确了下一阶段需要解决的问题，对学生的成长成才、长期发展具有重要意义。
