Queen Mary University of London Engineering School, NPU Held UK-NPU Enterprise Education Workshop
On 11 December 2017, “Spirit of Youth -- Make Ideas Happen” UK-NPU Enterprise Education Workshop, hosted by British Embassy, was held by Queen Mary University of London Engineering School, NPU (JEI) in East Teaching Building, Chang'an Campus, NPU.
The Secondary Secretary Ms Jane Fulbrook and Regional Affairs Officer Ms Wang Jiachen from British Embassy, Enterprise Education (EE) experts Julian, Zhubei, Charlotte, Mavis form Venture Education, and 150 teachers and students from NPU attended the workshop.
Nowadays, students have to face many challenges in a changing world after their graduation and starting a career becomes a big question. A survey from Cambridge University showed that the company managers preferred innovative talents who could work out practical problems in creative ways.
At the very beginning, the EE experts gave tests on famous Chinese and British inventions to students. All of the students needed to collaborate in groups to figure out answers which were graded. The two groups with the highest scores gained prizes and gifts. After that, the host introduced the concept of EE based on current global employment status and operation of EE education abroad to inspire students about the importance of “making ideas happen”. Next, the host further elaborated several key qualities that the university students should be equipped with, such as time pressure, rapid risk assessment, sympathy, etc., and emphasized the importance of innovative ability and critical thinking.
After the speech, a short video from Queen Mary University of London was played. Two students who made the video said that they hoped to find “good ideas” to solve their transportation problems in London where there is changeable weather and where there are no bicycle lanes.
Students then were divided into 10 groups to cope with various challenges, for which they needed to come up with feasible solutions with consideration to the concept, customers, competitors, compatibility, contents and cash in 30 minutes. Afterwards, an additional 20 minutes was given to students for them to make an innovative advertisement video for their ideas. During this process, students experienced and learned how to deal with extreme time pressure and teamwork. After discussing and evaluating, judges from the British Embassy chose four best teams according to creativity, communication, compatibility and critical thinking respectively.
At the end of the workshop, the EE experts encouraged students to “make their ideas happen” in the last few days of 2017 and in life. In the meanwhile, they shared many different ways of innovation including Maker Space.
Enterprise education is quite popular in British universities. The NPU-QMUL JEI draws on the academic expertise of both institutions, as well as the strengths of two distinct educational cultures – the mathematical and scientific rigor found in China and the emphasis placed on creative problem-solving and transferable skills in the UK. Students graduate with a unique blend of skills, valued in China and around the world. This activity encouraged JEI students to put ideas into practice, hold a positive attitude, have sympathy towards others and make the contribution to the world.
“Spirit of Youth” is inspired by Her Royal Highness Princess Annie of British Royal Family, the British Ambassador in China Barbara Woodward, and Jiang Shuying, the famous actress in China. The activities last from July to December in 2017 and are warmly welcomed with a focus on six different fields that mutually benefit China and Britain: cultural innovation, physical education, health, scientific innovation, and education.
玛丽女王工程学院承办英国大使馆“创新创业”教育工作坊
2017年12月11日，由英国驻华大使馆主办，西北工业大学伦敦玛丽女王大学工程学院承办的“灵动青春：启动创新行动力—英国-西北工业大学创新创业工作坊”在西北工业大学长安校区教学东楼举办。
英国大使馆Jane Fulbrook、王佳晨及问创教育的英国教育专家Julian、Zhubei、Charlotte、Mavis莅临活动现场，全校师生共150余人参与此次活动。
当今世界瞬息万变，这无疑使刚刚走出校园、步入社会的毕业生们面临着更为多重的生存挑战。那么，新一代青年人如何在当前形势下开辟一片属于自己的天地呢？英国剑桥的一项调查给出了答案：高管们青睐能用创新方法解决实际问题的创新型人才。
活动开始，主讲嘉宾抛出了几道有关中国和英国著名发明创造的测试题，组织开展小组合作、互评打分活动，并为得分最高的两个小组颁发证书和礼品。随后，主讲嘉宾结合当今全球就业现状，引入EE（enterprise education）概念，介绍了EE教育在国外的运行状况，并引导同学们思考“让想法发生”的重要性。接下来，主讲嘉宾进一步提出了当今大学生应该具备的几个关键性素养，例如时间压力、急速风险评估和富有同理心等，并特别强调了创新创造能力和批判性思维的重要性。
演讲完毕，现场进入互动体验环节。主讲嘉宾为全体师生播放了一段QMUL学生短片。两位录制学生表示，复杂多变的天气、无自行车道的困扰、校园车辆的管理疏漏、校园自行车安全事的时有发生，促使他们希望寻找“good ideas ”去解决在伦敦安全、方便出行的问题。随后，所有参与同学被分成十组，主讲嘉宾发放概念画布，提出挑战：每组30分钟，设计创新可行的解决方案，包括concept（模型）、customers（受众）、competitors（竞争者）、compatibility（通用性）、contents（内容）、cash（资金）六个部分。主讲嘉宾参与各组讨论并给予指导。完成产品初步设计后是更富挑战性的20分钟限时产品创意广告视频制作环节。在这一过程中，同学们实践并体验了新学到的极端时间压力工作、小组协作等技能。经过认真讨论和科学评估，大使馆评委团分别从创新性、沟通性、通用性、批判性思维四个角度各选出一份最佳作品，并颁奖合影。
活动结束时，主讲嘉宾引导同学们去思考，在2017的最后几天里，还有没有什么“good ideas”可以发生，并鼓励同学们去积极实现，不留遗憾。最后，主讲嘉宾分享了创客空间、创新基地等多种当代大学生实践创新途径，并发出号召：传承创新创造精神，在生活中实践“让想法发生”。
创新创业教育在英国大学广受推崇。西北工业大学伦敦玛丽女王大学工程学院将中国大学在数学和科学严谨性上的传统和英国大学在创造性解决问题以及软技能培养的特色相结合，致力于培养在中国和世界范围的工作环境中表现出色的优秀学生。此次活动极大地鼓舞女王学院的同学们把想法付诸于行动，构筑积极思维，保持同理心并对周围世界做出贡献。
据悉，“灵动青春”活动由英国皇室公主殿下安妮公主、英国驻华大使吴百纳女爵士以及“灵动青春”形象大使中国女演员江疏影共同启动。系列活动从2017年7月一直持续至12月，聚焦中英互惠合作的六大领域：文化创意、体育、旅游、健康、科学创新和教育，获得热烈反响。
The 2017 Sino-UK Symposium on Advanced Materials and Structures / Discipline Development Forum Was Held in NPU

The 2017 Sino-UK Symposium on Advanced Materials and Structures/Discipline Development Forum which was jointly hosted by Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) and Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) successfully took place in NPU Old Campus on November 7, 2017. The meeting was organized by Office of Disciplines Development, Office of International Cooperation, School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Natural and Applied Sciences, School of Mechanical Engineering, QMUL Engineering School, and NPU and NPU-QMUL Joint Research Institute of Advanced Materials and Structures.
The meeting was hosted by Prof. Jie Kong, Dean of QMUL Engineering School, NPU. Vice President Weihong Zhang of NPU attended the meeting and delivered a welcome speech to show appreciation to the prestigious experts and scholars presented. The official operation of QMUL Engineering School, NPU and the establishment of NPU-QMUL Joint Research Institute of Advanced Materials and Structures have built a solid foundation for the success of this meeting.
During the two-days meeting, professors and experts in Materials Science and Structures from QMUL, National University of Singapore, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Dalian University of Technology, Xi’an Jiaotong University, and NPU were invited to give presentations and reports on advanced ceramic materials, nano energy materials, functional polymers and composites, biomaterials and engineering, and material structure design and optimization. The meeting aims to promote cooperation and communication in the fields of materials science and material structure design and optimization between China and UK for the purpose to advance in-depth research and application.
The meeting was filled with an atmosphere of international academic communication and exchange. The presitigious professors and experts have advocated a lot creative ideas in new directions in the area of advanced materials and structures. Professors and leaders from Office of International Cooperation, Office of Disciplines Development, School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Natural and Applied Sciences, QMUL Engineering School, NPU also joined the meeting.

11月6日至8日，由西北工业大学、伦敦玛丽女王大学（QMUL）主办，西北工业大学学科建设办公室、国际合作处、材料学院、理学院、机电学院、玛丽女王工程学院、NPU-QMUL先进材料与结构联合研究院承办的“2017中英先进材料与结构研讨会暨学科发展论坛”在西北工业大学国际会议中心顺利召开。
我校玛丽女王工程学院院长孔杰教授主持本次会议开幕式。张卫红副校长致欢迎辞，代表学校向莅临参会的海内外专家表示热烈欢迎和衷心感谢。从2015年9月中英高级别人文交流机制第三次会议以来，西北工业大学与伦敦玛丽女王大学不断深化国际交流合作，携手创新、共同发展，先后成立了西北工业大学伦敦玛丽女王大学工程学院、NPU-QMUL先进材料与结构联合研究院，双方在国际合作交流领域均取得了长足进步，为本次会议顺利举行奠定了坚实基础。相信本次会议各位专家能碰撞出思想的火花，为中英两国材料学科与结构优化设计学科的合作交流提供更多宝贵意见和建议，进一步提升我校国际化发展水平。英方代表、伦敦玛丽女王大学Mike Reece教授在致辞中对学校精心筹备此次会议表示由衷感谢，表示将继续加强两校的学术交流与协作，充分利用两校的优质教育资源，探索创新合作的新模式。
在11月7日的研讨会上，来自伦敦玛丽女王大学、西北工业大学、新加坡国立大学、美国埃默里大学、西安交通大学、南京航空航天大学、上海大学、中科院长春应用化学研究所、大连理工大学、华中科技大学、中科院化学所等21位先进材料与结构领域的国际知名专家学者，就先进陶瓷材料、纳米能源材料、功能高分子及复合材料、生物材料与工程、材料拓扑结构设计与优化领域进行学术交流和学科发展深度研讨，呈现了一场国际化高水平学术盛宴。
在11月8日的学科发展论坛上，中英两国专家就材料领域学科发展内容及方向进行了深入探讨，并就NPU-QMUL先进材料与结构联合研究院的相关事宜进行细致沟通。当天下午，中英专家赴西安国家民用航天产业基地进行参观调研，就下一步合作交流工作进行深入交流。
本次研讨会中英专家学者就先进材料与结构优化设计议题，提出了一系列关于发展方向和研究课题的创新观点。我校将以“一带一路”战略为发展契机，从西安出发，乘风起航，助力中英两国在先进材料与结构优化设计领域的深入交流与合作，缔造先进材料与结构学科创新发展的新篇章！
Prof Wen Wang and Ms Anne Parry from Queen Mary University of London visited JEI
On 20th October 2017, Prof Wen Wang, Dean of School of Engineering and Materials Science, Ms Anne Parry, Faculty Operating Officer, from Queen Mary University of London visited Queen Mary University of London Engineering School, NPU (JEI). With the company of Zhang Fuli, deputy director of the International Cooperation Department, NPU, Kong Jie, Dean of JEI and Chen Jun, Vice Dean of JEI, Prof. Wen Wang and Ms Anne Parry gave a lecture about campus study and life to all JEI students of 2017, and visited JEI offices, students’ common room and Internet smart classrooms.
During the lecture to all JEI new students of 2017, Prof Wen Wang demonstrated the gist of economy, culture and education in London, and the long history of Queen Mary. He also introduced his research work in the field of vascular endothelial cell and biomechanics. Ms Anne Parry introduced many famous places and British cultural characteristics. She expected students to visit Queen Mary University in London to take academic exchange so that they could experience the unique cultural atmosphere in London and British characteristics.

10月20日上午，伦敦玛丽女王大学工程与材料学院院长王文教授及伦敦玛丽女王大学理工学部执行官Anne Parry女士访问西北工业大学伦敦玛丽女王大学工程学院（JEI）。王文教授一行在国际合作处副处长张富利、玛丽女王工程学院院长孔杰、副院长陈俊的陪同下与学院2017级全体新生举行了学习生活座谈，并参观了学院办公区、学生活动区和互联网智慧教室。
在2017级全体新生学习生活座谈会上，王文教授向大家展示了英国伦敦经济、文化、教育等方面概况及伦敦玛丽女王大学的悠久历史，并向同学们介绍了他在血管内皮细胞生物力学领域的研究工作。Anne Parry女士介绍了英国的风景名胜、文化特色等，并期盼同学们前往英国伦敦玛丽女王大学进行学习交流，体验英国独特的文化氛围，感受别样的英伦特色。
QMUL signs major strategic collaboration agreement with China’s Northwestern Polytechnical University
A memorandum of understanding outlining the intent for the alliance was signed at the 8th UK-China Education Summit on Thursday 17th September 2015. A further signing to confirm the development of the collaboration was then made on the following day at the QMUL Mile End campus by Professor Simon Gaskell, QMUL President and Principal with Professor Wang Jinsong, President of NPU.

Chinese Ministry of Education gives go-ahead to new Joint Educational Institution
QMUL, in partnership with Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU), has been granted permission by the Chinese Ministry of Education to establish a new Joint Educational Institution. The new Institution, to be called 'Queen Mary University of London Engineering School, Northwestern Polytechnical University', will be based at NPU’s campuses in Xi’an, China and will provide high quality degree programmes in the area of Engineering Materials that will begin admitting students in September 2017.
中外合作办学机构-西北工业大学伦敦玛丽女王大学工程学院获中国教育部批准
中国教育部批准伦敦玛丽女王大学与西北工业大学成立中外合作办学机构。新成立的西北工业大学伦敦玛丽女王大学工程学院将坐落在中国西安的西工大校区，在工程材料领域为学生提供世界一流的教育教学。学院将从2017年9月起开始录取新生。
NPU Professors visit QMUL for staff training
In preparation for the launch of the NPU-QMUL Joint Educational Institute (JEI), the first 4 NPU professors visited London in July 2016 as part of their training programme. They attended an intensive course on international education at QMUL’s Centre for Academic and Professional Development. They also met with staff from the School of Engineering and Materials Science, Language Centre and Materials Research Institute to discuss the development of the JEI and related Joint Research Centre.
Professor Xuetao Shi said “We really got to know better the different teaching structure between China and UK and this will definitely be helpful for our new JEI”.
西工大教授一行到访伦敦玛丽女王大学
为了更好的筹建西工大-伦敦玛丽女王大学工程学院，四位西工大教授作为首批进修教职员工于2016年7月抵达伦敦。他们参加了由伦敦玛丽女王大学学术与职业培训中心提供的为期两周、紧凑充实的进修课程。西工大的四位教授在课程之余会见了来自材料科学与工程学院、语言中心、以及材料科研中心的教职员工，共同探讨建设西工大-伦敦玛丽女王大学工程学院以及联合科研中心的相关事宜。
史学涛教授表示：“我们必须加深对于中英教育模式的理解，这将有助于我们更好的建设西工大-伦敦玛丽女王大学工程学院。”
