Dr Rehan Shah has published a guidance article titled 'How can sustainability be integrated in engineering modules through mathematics content?' aimed at academics and educators at all levels in higher education who wish to integrate sustainability into mathematics-specific modules within the engineering curriculum.

This forms part of a suite of resources of the Engineering Professors Council’s (EPC) recently launched Sustainability Toolkit supported by the Royal Academy of Engineers and Siemens to ensure that sustainability becomes a core tenet of engineering education, training and professional practice in line with the requirements of the Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes in engineering (AHEP, 4th edition).

As part of the EPC’s commitment to support its member institutions to integrate sustainability content in engineering education, the toolkit comprises 12 guidance articles (in which Dr Shah’s contribution features), 18 different teaching resources including five case studies and a library of links to sustainability communities and networks that promote collaborative efforts. The toolkit will operate as an open-access platform where users can also submit their resources for review and inclusion and it also directs users to supplementary materials curated by a team of experts.

The article is a precursor to initiatives already being undertaken by Dr Shah to introduce diversity, ethics and sustainability into the first and second-year undergraduate mathematics-based modules at SEMS in QMUL.
